Persistent flames ravaged a New Canaan home Saturday, completely destroying the structure.
Firefighters responded to the blaze at 488 West Road at around 4:30 p.m., but were unable to put out the flames due to the lack of fire hydrants in the neighborhood. The 30 firefighters from New Canaan were aided by an additional 30 firefighters from about six other departments, who rushed to the scene with water tanks.
Fire officials say the homeowner was out of town when the fire started. They are still investigating the cause. The flames were so intense that small fires around the property were still being extinguished on Sunday afternoon. Luckily, no one was injured as a result of the fire.
According to fire officials, the nearest hydrant to the home is about 4,000 feet away. They say fires are more frequent at this time of year due to holiday decorations like candles and lights, as well as residents using their fireplaces.
