First Stratford mosquito pools test positive for West Nile virus

The Stratford Health Department reports that the first local mosquito pools of the season have tested positive for West Nile virus. Mosquitoes collected at Beaver Dam Road and Beacon Point last week were found to carry the virus, according to the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station.
Health Director Andrea Boissevain said positive mosquito pools are typically detected this time of year and urged residents to take simple precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Stratford's annual catch basin treatment program, which targets mosquito larvae before they become adults, is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks.
Officials also encouraged residents to eliminate standing water around their properties, keep window and door screens in good repair, wear protective clothing outdoors, and use insect repellent when needed.
Most West Nile virus infections cause mild symptoms, but severe illness can occur in rare cases, particularly among older adults.
