Food banks in southwestern Connecticut say that while they have been receiving a modicum of donations, the demand for the holiday season is outweighing what they have.
At the Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County in Stamford, a supply of almost 3,000 turkeys was given out Thursday. Kate Lombardo, the executive director of the food bank, says she's expecting twice as many people will be coming to get turkeys this Thanksgiving than in the past.
"We figure that we're going to be handing out somewhere in the neighborhood of 7,000 turkeys ? compare that to last year at 3,000," Lombardo says.
Food banks across the region are being hurt by fewer donations from corporations and local residents reeling from the economic downturn.
