With hurricane season officially underway on Thursday, forecasters are predicting four major hurricanes could occur in the months ahead.

June 1 marks the beginning of the season which runs through Nov. 30. But 2017's first tropical development already occurred - Tropical Storm Arlene - back in April. Predictions also call for 11 to 17 named storms this season.

Norwalk is taking precedent to be prepared in the event of a major storm. First responders are meeting with locals to teach them CPR, fire safety and more necessary skills.

Norwalk Emergency Management Deputy Director Michele DeLuca says before severe weather approaches families should put an emergency plan in place. This includes having flashlights ready and working, securing vehicles or outdoor furniture and knowing where to evacuate to, should the situation call for it.

Norwalk Emergency Management adds that their social media pages are a necessary resource during emergency situations.
