A former Marine who is suffering from health issues says after years of hard work, he is now homeless and living in his car.
David Hawkins says he became homeless back in March after his income dropped off when he became too sick to work.
"The indignity is, you know you walk the street, sometimes you're looking for something to eat, you know you don't have a warm place to lay your head at night," he says.
Hawkins, who is a diabetic with other major health problems including Cushings disease, says he now sleeps in his car.
Even though Hawkins is now on disability, he says he has not been able to get subsidized housing and can no longer afford an apartment. He says even the Veterans Administration has not been able to help.
After getting out of the Marines, Hawkins says he worked in the automotive service industry and was the public relations director for the Discovery Museum for many years.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal says he will try and help but cannot make any promises.
"I'm fighting for stronger, better programs as a member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee so that no veteran ever will be homeless and David Hawkins, perhaps can be spared this fate if we come together as a nation on behalf of all of our veterans and do the right thing,” he says.
A fund has been established to help Hawkins.
