Connecticut's two casinos are reopening on June 1 even though Gov. Ned Lamont says it's a dangerous gamble.
At Foxwoods, only one-third of the slot machines will be operational. Chairs at gaming tables will also be spaced out at a safe distance. There will be three players to a table, each separated by plexiglass. Only the dealer will be allowed to touch the cards.
Casino officials say there will be temperature screening for all guests entering, a mandatory face-mask policy and social distancing markers throughout the facility.
They say people will be turned away if the casinos reach their capacity.
At nearby Mohegan Sun, guests will walk through a thermal temperature scan.
Gov. Lamont has voiced his opposition but cannot stop them from opening. The casinos are on tribal land. However, he could pull their liquor licenses, but admitted that would be “premature.”
Mashantucket Pequot Chair Rodney Butler says there are “a lot of levers that the governor could be considering.”
“At the end of the day, once people get comfortable with our plan, I think cooler heads will prevail,” he told News 12.
Only a fraction of Foxwoods' 4,500 employees will be back on the job – mostly cleaning workers.
Both casinos said they've invited Gov. Lamont to take the tour himself. So far, they said he's declined.
