A nonprofit organization hosted its fifth annual back-to-school shopping spree Sunday where economically disadvantaged students can shop for free.
The event takes place once a year before school starts, but the organization Back to School Shop works year-round to make purchases and gather volunteers. All monetary donations go straight to buying the kids brand new clothes and school supplies.
Stamford elementary school students were paired with a volunteer who helped them pick out everything from backpacks to coats. The more than 350 kids who came had been approved by local social workers and were registered for the event.
While a child was paired up with a volunteer personal shopper, their parents could go into another room to learn about local resources.
Jane Levene, the co-founder and co-president of Back to School Shop, said the excitement on the kids’ faces makes the whole year of work worth it.
