A friend of the man who was fatally struck by a car Friday describes the victim as "invaluable" to the local school where he was a substitute teacher.

Carmine Passero, 65, died Friday after being struck on Strawberry Hill Avenue in Stamford, the street where he lived and worked.

News 12 reported last week that a driver in a white Mercedes struck the man as he walked down the sidewalk across the street from Stamford High School, causing fatal injuries.

"You're a little numb, you can't believe someone you see every day or walking through the streets is not with us anymore," says Bob Augustyn, the friend who is a guidance counselor at Stamford High School.

Augustyn says Passero had worked for years as a Spanish teacher at Cloonan Middle School, also in Stamford, then retired and began substitute teaching at Stamford High.

Police interviewed the driver of the car, Peter Parashkevov, but there is no word on whether he will face charges.
