Gay Bridgeport Central students say they're organizing a peaceful rally in an attempt to end to bias and hatred at the high school.
The event is to take place outside the school June 1. Some of the students say if they don?t speak out, the torment they already face may escalate into violence.
Kim Knapp, a Central student, said, she faced a troubling incident at the school. Knapp said she was spit on and called a derogatory term for homosexuals while walking up a flight of stairs.
Gay, lesbian, bisexual and heterosexual students tell News 12 Connecticut they have already witnessed violent acts. Last year, a Central High student claims he was attacked on school grounds for being openly gay. Many fear a similar attack could happen again due to a lack of action by school officials.
No one from the faculty was available for comment, but the district does have a zero tolerance policy against discrimination.
