A state lawmaker will be getting a special Christmas gift ahead of the holiday this year - a new kidney.
State Rep. Jeff Currey, of East Hartford, has waged countless battles in the Capitol. But he announced this summer on Twitter that he's fighting for his life.
"Things got very bad, very quickly. And at that time, it was suggested to begin the transplant process," he says.
The Get Jeff a Kidney movement spread like wildfire, and this week, Currey says he found out he will be getting exactly what he needs.
"The last three months have just been completely all about finding the direct donor," he says.
Karen Gauvain, a bakery owner in Avon, will be donating her kidney to Currey.
"Karen's get a bum rap, people! Because I have a Karen in my life, and my Karen is good," he says.
"We need a new negative name. I think we're done with 'Karen.' I think it needs to be something else," Gauvain says.
The surgery will wait until after the holidays, which is Gauvain's busy season at the bakery.
"I'm not super nervous. They've explained it really well. I think for the donor it's not so bad," she says. "For Jeff, it's going to be a lot worse."
For Currey, the surgery comes just before he heads back to the Capitol.
"In an ideal world, swear-in on a Wednesday, get cut open on a Thursday, and then get to work two weeks later," he says.
Fittingly, Gauvain's bakery is named Pure Love.
