Westport police are searching for the person who stole wedding gifts from a reception over the weekend.

The theft happened Saturday night at the Inn at Longshore. Police say the thief took a birdcage that was filled with envelopes and surveillance video shows him running out of the lobby and across the golf course. Police later recovered the birdcage, only to find it empty.

It is not known exactly how much money was taken or if the suspect acted alone.

Police are calling the robbery "a crime of opportunity." They say the suspect was dressed like he was there for the wedding, but they do not know if it was a guest or a party crasher.
