Tobacco giant Phiip Morris International will be moving its headquarters from New York City to a location within Fairfield County.
The announcement was made in Stamford Tuesday morning.
"Philip Morris International, building a smoke free future, was looking all over the world for new headquarters, looking all over the United States, and they decided on Connecticut," Gov. Ned Lamont said. He added that the relocation is a boost for the economy and will provide over 200 jobs, which he said will continue to grow. "Twenty-thousand plus families moved to the state, now you see it with a fortune 100 companies moving to the state. I like the momentum."
Philip Morris International is known for Marlboro cigarettes, but CEO Jacek Olczack said the company is committed to a smoke free future with a focus on carbon neutrality. He added that the smoke free tobacco products will help those who are addicted to smoking to a safer alternative. "I believe the faster we achieve our smoke free objectives, the better it will be for everyone, the smokers, the society," Olczack said.
The company plans to move to Fairfield by the summer of 2022.
It has not announced the specific location yet.
