Gov. Ned Lamont filed paperwork Friday to run for reelection.

Friday's announcement ends months of speculation about the governor's plans.

Lamont said he wanted to until after Election Day to make an official announcement.

He and Lt. Gov. Bysiewicz said this week's elections are clear mandate for four more years.

Lamont will face a challenge from fellow Democrat State Sen. Josh Elliot.

On the Republican side, State Sen. Ryan Fazio has officially entered the race.

New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart is exploring whether she will run and promises an announcement in the next few weeks.

The only other governor in modern times who won a third term was Republican John Rowland.

Polls show that Lamont is one of the nation's most popular governors.

He plans to have a formal campaign launch next week.
