Friday's announcement ends months of speculation about the governor's plans.

He will face a challenge from fellow Democrat State Sen. Josh Elliot.

On the Republican side, State Sen. Ryan Fazio officially entered the race.

The only other governor in modern times who won a third term was Republican John Rowland.
