A person was killed after their vehicle rolled forward and struck them in Newtown Thursday, police say.

It happened on Hawleyville Road near Old Hawleyville Road and adjacent to the I-84 Exit 9 westbound off-ramp at 6:15 p.m.

Police say a person was operating a commercial vehicle heading north on Hawleyville Road when they stopped and excited the vehicle on the northbound shoulder of the road.

The vehicle then rolled forward, struck and killed the person.

Police say the vehicle came to a stop near the Exit 9 commuter lot.

When first responders arrived, they found bystanders who had begun performing life saving measures on the victim who was lying in the shoulder of the road.

The victim, who has not been identified, died at the scene.

Police say there is no reason to believe any other vehicles were involved in the accident.

Anyone who may have seen the vehicle parked on the side of the road in front of the Papa Al's shopping center around that time to call them at 203-426-5841.

Hawleyville Road was closed while police investigated but has since reopened.
