Gov. Ned Lamont vetoed House Bill 5002 on Monday morning. It would have enacted sweeping changes to local zoning and parking requirements.

The bill aimed to address high housing costs and the state of Connecticut's housing shortage.

The legislation would have required towns to zone for a "fair share" quota of units. It also would have eliminated parking requirements for smaller apartment complexes.

Gov. Lamont also vetoed a bill that would pay striking workers unemployment.

Senate President Pro Tempore Martin M. Looney and Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff said in a statement that they were "deeply disappointed" in the governor's decision, calling it "the most comprehensive effort to tackle Connecticut’s urgent housing crisis."
