Gov. M. Jodi Rell (R) recommended Saturday that construction on the new railroad maintenance facility in New Haven be scaled back after receiving the audit of the project.

According to Rell, there are essential components of the construction project that could be the current focus while funding is tight. The maintenance facility will service new train cars on the Metro-North New Haven line.

State Sen. Bob Duff (D) says the project should move forward in order to spend state money efficiently and avoid contributing to the budget gap.

"We have not broken ground, we will never get this thing built in a year, which is why we're pressing the administration to find interest in this thing,? Duff says. ?It's going to be costly, we know that. It's fine to put this out over a number of years, which we're going to have to do."

Sen. Duff says in order to pay for the construction and new cars, train fares will increase 1 percent every year for the next seven years.
