For the second straight year, Greenwich has been voted the top football team in the state of Connecticut.
Hearst Connecticut Media recently released its annual preseason poll ahead of week one of the high school football season. New Canaan, Fairfield Prep, Staples and St. Joseph high schools also made the top 10.
The Cardinals are looking to repeat as state champions after raising the Class LL plaque last December. "If we don't get a ring, the season's a failure. That's our mindset and that's what we're going to keep playing by. Go 100% every day when we're out there," said junior center Peter Vomvolakis.
Vomvolakis is looking to help open up some holes for the running backs this season, including for his brother George. "Usually on a team like this, people say, 'We got it last year, why try this year?' But we don't have that mentality at all," said the senior.
Greenwich opens the season this Saturday at 2 p.m. against Fairfield Prep.
