The Greenwich and Stamford school districts said today they will hold classes Monday even though it is Veterans Day, a federal holiday.

In years past, Greenwich schools have always been closed for Veterans Day.

Vietnam vet Lutz Spika says no holiday means more to him than Veterans Day and that schools should close to honor those who served no matter how many days students have missed.

Greenwich Superintendent of Schools Doctor William McKersie says the decision was difficult to make, but there was no other holiday the Board of Education could use to make up the lost days.

Dr. McKersie says materials have already been sent to schools so educators can use part of the day teaching students about what veterans do and what they mean to the country.

There will also be commemorative events Sunday and in schools Monday to honor veterans.
