A healthy eating program is helping Bronx residents save money on nutritious farmers market items.
Councilman Ritchie Torres secured $10,000 in the budget to give out Health Bucks to community-based organizations in his district.
Health Bucks are paper vouchers worth $2 each, and are developed and distributed by the city's Health Department District Public Health Offices. They can be used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at participating farmers markets.
"If you have an EBT card, for every $5 you spend, you receive $2 in Health Bucks coupons," Torres explained.
The program aims to reduce obesity rates in the community while promoting healthy eating habits.
Members of senior centers or health centers are encouraged to ask administrators about how to attain Health Bucks.
