The The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) lifted its boil water advisory for Hoboken residents after they had to take this precaution since Tuesday because of a large water main break in Jersey City, officials said.

Hoboken officials and Veolia Water say the 36-inch water main break on Jersey Avenue and 18th Street in Jersey City was first reported on Monday morning around 2:30.

Water was seen gushing out of the large hole on Tuesday, and then a boil water advisory for the City of Hoboken went into effect.

Repairs continued Wednesday, and the situation was fixed by the evening.

Following emergency repairs, subsequent testing shows the water quality to be safe and it is no longer necessary for residents to boil water before using.
