Hot, humid weather didn't stop people from enjoying Short Beach Wednesday, especially a senior citizen who walks near the beach each day.
As 90-degree temperatures blanketed Connecticut, 80-year-old Hugh Lenahan was pounding the pavement near the beach. He says he walks approximately 2 miles, once in the morning and once in the evening. During winter, a bundled-up Lenahan still goes on his walks.
"It doesn't bother me," he says. "Cold or rain or snow."
He logs his walks, and nearly every day of each month is marked. He says he started walking to control his diabetes and weight. "You gotta start somewhere," he says. "I started four years ago. And here I am, standing a little lighter."
While his dedication is admirable, health professionals say the sweltering heat presents a real threat. People are urged to look out for symptoms of heat-related illness. Those symptoms can include heavy sweating, weakness, nausea, vomiting and even cold, pale, clammy skin.
But for Lenahan, it is just another beautiful day for a walk. "Today there's a little breeze," he says. "This is nice."
