Nirav Mehta of Trumbull – along with his wife, son and daughter – spent Sunday morning serving fresh food to people who lined up under the John Street Bridge in Bridgeport.

"We've been doing this for almost four years now as part of an effort my son started through his nonprofit, Happy Helping Hands," said Nirav Mehta.

His son, Neil Mehta, 16, says he founded the nonprofit as a way of giving back.

"It's important to understand how lucky we are in life, and to always be mindful of others and of how we can help them whenever possible," the rising senior at Hopkins School in New Haven said.

The family said they prepare fresh food every weekend and spend every Sunday morning serving it to folks in Bridgeport.

Neil has also partnered with Bridgeport Public Schools to provide them with uniforms and school supplies throughout the school year.

"It's amazing to see a family get up early in the morning on a Sunday to come and serve the community on Father's Day," said state Sen. Sujata Gadkar-Wilcox, who represents both Bridgeport, Monroe and Trumbull. "What better way for a family to spend time together."
