New York's next governor addressed the state for the first time Wednesday to make a promise saying, “I will fight like hell for you every single day.”
Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul will replace Andrew Cuomo in less than two weeks after Cuomo resigned Tuesday, following an attorney general investigation that found he sexually harassed close to a dozen women.
While she must wait 12 more days before becoming the first woman to take New York’s highest office, she knows she has plenty of work to do. “Make no mistake. Our work has already begun… while it was not expected, it is a day for which I am prepared."
Hochul says she started days ago with one requirement. “No one who was named by doing anything in the report will remain in my administration.”
It’s an administration with plenty on its plate, starting with a resurgent COVID-19 with schools ready to open in just a few weeks - a difficult task for even the most experienced administration.
Still, News 12 political analyst Mike Dawidiziak says New York voters are likely to cut her some slack, for now. “I think she'll get a honeymoon period. I think there'll be a time where people will be rooting for her to succeed. It won't last. I mean, it's not going to last forever,” says Dawidiziak.
While Kathy Hochul waits to become governor, the impeachment of Gov. Cuomo continues. The Assembly’s judiciary committee still has a hearing planned for Monday, and Republicans on that committee say they are committed to seeing the process through to the end.
