News 12 Connecticut is investigating viral meningitis in light of the two recent cases reported at Wilton High School.
Dr. Sanjeev Rao, of Fairfield Urgent Care, says fortunately "viral" meningitis is not usually as serious as "bacterial" meningitis, but it is still an infection around the brain. Rao says since there is no treatment for viral meningitis, doctors will provide symptom relief until it runs its course.
With bacterial meningitis, there is urgency to treat the patient with intravenous antibiotics since it can be deadly.
Viral meningitis spreads like other viruses through respiratory droplets in the air, on hands and on surfaces. Symptoms include neck stiffness, fever, headache, nausea and an inability to look at bright lights.
Doctors say it is important to know the symptoms, and if they surface, get to the emergency room right away for testing.
