An illegal immigrant who fled the country after police say he raped a Sacred Heart student in 2014 has been arrested and charged.
Edibaldo "Eddie" Duran, 29, was taken into custody Wednesday in Mexico City before he was extradited back to Connecticut and formally charged.
According to Fairfield police, on Sept. 1, 2014, Duran broke into the victim's off-campus house on Berkeley Road around 3 a.m. They say he beat, sexually assaulted and choked her until she became unconscious. They also say he stole items from her home.
On Sept. 5, 2014, police say Duran boarded an AeroMexico flight from JFK to Mexico City where he had been living ever since.
The U.S. Marshal Service alerted police that they located Duran last week.
Duran is back in Connecticut, and he was expected to be arraigned in court Thursday.
