Investigators say that five children from Connecticut who died in a crash on the Hutchinson River Parkway in Scarsdale may have been panhandling before the incident.
Investigators have obtained surveillance footage from a New Jersey shopping center showing the children -- sisters, Zahnyiah and Shawnelll Cross, their half-brothers, AJ and Andrew Billips and the unlicensed driver, 16-year-old Malik Smith Jr. - hours before the crash interacting with people in a way that suggests they were panhandling.
In August, police say they were called to a Connecticut parking lot for a report of children asking for money and food.
The police report says the children claimed to be raising money for a youth basketball team, but no record of the team they were soliciting has been found.
