A 15-year legal battle over property once used for elevated train tracks above Jersey City seems to have come to an end.

The abandoned tracks have become overgrown with trees and brush, leading community advocates to push for it to become a park, similar to Manhattan’s High Line.

“The neighborhood felt strongly that this was a historic asset. And that it would make a tremendous contribution to open space in the neighborhood,” says Stephen Gucciardo with the Embankment Preservation Coalition.

A dispute over the land transfer by Conrail to private developers led to the legal standoff. But Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop says that an agreement was reached. Details are still being worked out.

Fulop tweeted in part, “Imagine an 8-acre elevated park in Jersey City.”

The preservation group leading the charge to save the embankment says that they look forward to the land being used for the community.
