The National Fire Protection Association says Christmas trees start more than 200 house fires across the United States each year.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology shared this video.  It shows how quickly a dry Christmas tree can burn compared to a watered tree.
To avoid a fire, the National Fire Protection Association says to add water to the tree stand every day.
Some other safety tips from NFPA:
- Make sure the Christmas tree is at least 3 feet away from any heat source, such as fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights
- Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit
- Use Christmas tree lights that are listed by a qualified testing lab. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use
- Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections
- Read the manufacturer’s instructions for the number of light strands to connect
- Never use lit candles to decorate the tree
- Always turn off lights before leaving home or going to bed
