Greenwich residents flocked to the groundbreaking for the Kindness Rocks Garden in front of Town Hall Friday.
Painted rocks with inspirational messages have been seen by many at parks or gas stations across the city, but they now have an official home.
"We wanted to make sure they had a permanent home because this is something we are hoping will continue for years to come," said Elisha Perez, co-founder of the Greenwich chapter.
The project is all in honor of a boy named Steven Sudell, a young boy from Greenwich, who was diagnosed with brain cancer last year.
"We learned about Steven and his journey and it really kind of lit a fire under us," Perez said.
The rocks are now painted by residents and people from all over the world. Each rock has its own inspirational message or is decorated in a way to bring hope to someone's life.
Those who want to participate are encouraged to paint small rocks and leave them for others to see.
