Democratic gubernatorial candidate Ned Lamont said he wants to add trains and shorten commute times by adding tolls on Connecticut highways.
He said it could raise $100 million to expand train service and that only trucks would pay the tolls, not drivers.
"We are running a multistate charity for out-of-state vehicles, especially trucks that are decimating our roadways," said Susan Bysiewicz, the Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor.
A trucking industry group responded that Lamont's plan is unfair, and said that the average trucker pays $17,000 in road taxes every year.
They also said Lamont's plan could face a lawsuit.
Ned Lamont admitted that truck-only tolls would only generate a fraction of the money needed to just repair roads.
News 12 Connecticut reached out to Republican Bob Stefanowski’s campaign for an interview but they said he wasn't available. Stefanowski said last week that there's a better option than tolls.
"There is a ton of private sector money out there that's waiting to invest in roads and bridges," he said.
