A Stamford cab driver is recovering following a crash in which he says a car ran a red light and hit his vehicle Sunday evening.

The incident happened near the intersection of South State Street and Washington Boulevard, next to the city's train station.

The cab driver, 60-year-old Lesly Thiersaint, says he was on his way to pick up a customer when a car going northbound on Washington Boulevard ran a red light and hit the cab. He says the crash caused his vehicle to hit a wall and roll over.

Police say 24-year-old Walter Hernandez, of Stamford, faces a list of charges including reckless driving, failure to obey a traffic signal, and operating without a license.

Thiersaint, who works for Independent Taxi of Stamford, says a good Samaritan used a crowbar to get him out of the cab.

He says he was taken to the hospital and released, but still suffers from pain in his chest and arms.

Officials say Hernandez is out on a $500 bond and is due back in court later this month.
