A local architect is building an environmentally friendly home in Fairfield for his family featuring a non-traditional building material.
Leigh Overland's home on Shoreham Terrace is made from Insulated Concrete Forms, instead of wood framing.
ICF is hard-foam forms filled with concrete to create the exterior walls.
Using this material makes homes hurricane and flood proof. It can also reduce energy bills by up to 70%.
Overland, who is also the founder of Leigh Overland Architect, says while he is not affiliated with the material, he has been using it for eight years and recommends to it all customers.
"One of the major factors of a sustainable home like this, made out of basically concrete with the form foam, is so that we have a house that is storm and fire resistant, or proof, and you don't get any mold or mildew. So you're not working on a home consistently to keep it up. These homes should last centuries, not decades," Overland says.
The project, which was started a year and half ago, is scheduled to be completed in early winter.
