With the 2024 Paris Olympics kicking off this Friday, Connecticut is sending a strong contingent of athletes to compete on the world stage.
More than two dozen athletes with ties to the state will be vying for medals in a variety of disciplines.
  • Ben Washburne of Madison, a 23-year-old para-rower, is making his Olympic debut. He recently captured gold in the PR3 mixed four with coxswain at the 2023 Para Rowing Regatta to Paris.
  • Kieran Smith, a 24-year-old swimmer from Ridgefield, is returning to the Olympics for Team USA. At his first Olympics in Tokyo in 2020, Smith earned a bronze medal in the men's 400-meter freestyle final.
  • Matthew Torres, a 23-year-old para-swimmer from Ansonia, is heading to Paris after overcoming significant challenges. Born with amniotic band syndrome, he is missing half his right leg, has deformities on both hands, and experiences moderate hearing loss. Despite these obstacles, Torres achieved a bronze medal at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo.
