Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch surveyed the site of the city's old landfill Wednesday, where he hopes a solar power station will soon be built.
The Connecticut Siting Council, who must approve the plan, held its final hearing on the topic Tuesday.
The Green Energy Park would turn the old landfill on Barnum Dyke Road into a power station made up of 9,000 solar panels.
Officials say the solar park will power thousands of homes with pollution-free energy and earn the city about $7 million over a 20-year period.
City officials say the city's old landfill cannot be developed for any other practical purpose because it is capped to protect residents from the pollution beneath the surface.
City Councilman Enrique Torres says the solar park would create a new industrial zone, which he opposes.
"I'm a technological guy, I love high technology," he says. "It's a great idea. My problem is not the technology or the idea, my problem is the location."
Mayor Bill Finch says the location is ideal and adds that by reducing air pollution, the Green Energy Park would help children suffering from asthma.
