The Lockheed Martin acquisition of Stratford-based Sikorsky Aircraft closed on Friday. 

The company will now be called "Sikorsky: A Lockheed Martin Company." United Technology officials received all the regulatory approvals necessary to finalize the deal.

The two companies have worked together on certain projects in the past. The company's new president, Daniel Schultz, says that they can draw on their different strengths and that the collaboration will prove to be an asset. The deal was reported to be worth $9 billion. 

Schultz says the acquisition is an exciting opportunity for the two companies to come together to drive the future in both military and commercial rotary wing aircraft. He says it will also help Lockheed Martin expand into the growing area of helicopter production and development.

Sikorsky employs nearly 7,000 people. Schultz says the company plans to keep operations in Connecticut, and there are no immediate plans for layoffs.
