The state Department of Transportation said Wednesday that Route 53 in Redding will be closed for several weeks this summer.
The work will begin this week. Starting in July, a section of Route 53 will be closed for more than a month.
The DOT says the bridge over the Saugatuck River needs a safety upgrade, including replacing the deck.
Officials say it will be down to one lane for the next three months or so before it's shut down for 42 days.
Police say the official detour will take traffic down Route 58 to 107, but they are concerned some drivers will turn onto curvy Umpawaug Road.
They are asking drivers who use Umpawaug Road to be respectful of the fact that it is a residential road, and to note that there a lot of children on the very narrow and winding road.
The whole project is expected to be completed in September.
