Some liquor stores are worried about a new push to lower the price customers pay for their products.
Connecticut requires alcohol retailers to charge a minimum amount and it has to be above the wholesale price they pay. The 82-year-old law was designed to protect small shops from bigger chains that can afford to buy booze in bulk and sell it at a loss.
As part of his new budget, Gov. Dannel Malloy wants to get rid of minimum pricing.
But some small retailers worry that could hurt their bottom line as larger retailers would be able to charge less.
The big-box stores say that's simply untrue. In states where stores can charge as little as they want, prices have dropped for everyone.
