The son of Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy was arrested on robbery charges following a drug-related incident Wednesday.
Ben Malloy, 21, surrendered to police and is one of the three men allegedly involved in what police say was a home invasion during a drug deal.
Police say that the three men arranged to buy marijuana, but instead of handing over cash, they pulled out guns and demanded the drugs. Eric Sing, the resident of the home, called the police and was also arrested as a result of the incident.
Mayor Malloy, who is exploring a run for the governor's office, says that his family is cooperating fully with police and asks the public to respect their privacy as the police do their job.
Though faced with a firestorm of controversy, Malloy is showing no signs of backing down from the governor's race. A campaign volunteer from Malloy's camp says the arrest has nothing to do with politics; it's a family matter. State Democrats, who have yet to endorse their candidate for governor, echoed the same sentiments.
"We have worked very hard as parents to support our son and get him the help he needs to combat his emotional illness and substance abuse," Mayor Malloy says. "We remain deeply concerned about his well-being, and will continue to support him throughout his treatment and beyond."
