A Bridgeport man appeared in court Monday for allegedly stabbing his pregnant ex-girlfriend.
Police say Jose Velez, 41, stabbed Francis Santos a day after she ended the relationship.
It happened Saturday night on Pearl Harbor Circle.
Officers say Velez broke into the home and stabbed Santos, 39, in the neck and back. She is in her first trimester of pregnancy.
Police say Velez has had many run-ins with the law in the past. Officials say he has a violent history of arrests in Bridgeport, Trumbull, Stratford and Fairfield.
Authorities say Santos was in serious condition, but they are optimistic that she will make a recovery.
The judge set Velez's bond at $1 million and ordered that Velez stay away from Santos and her family. The judge says he is not allowed within 2,500 feet of Santos' property, and he will have to wear a GPS tracker if he makes bail.
Neighbors tell News 12 that Santos also has an 8-year-old son. Santos' family says her son is safe with them while she continues to heal.
