A Bronx man pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges he stabbed his girlfriend and her granddaughter before setting their apartment on fire and trying to kill himself.
Henry Maldonado, 55, is facing a murder charge in the May 11 death of Carmen Irizarry. He also allegedly stabbed her 9-year-old granddaughter, Heaven Irizarry.
Prosecutors say Maldonado stabbed Carmen Irizarry 16 times as she slept. The granddaughter was treated for five stab wounds.
Police say the child was able to escape and run to a neighbor's upstairs apartment.
Maldonado also faces charges of attempted murder and arson. He allegedly lit the apartment on fire after the attacks.
Maldonado has 18 prior arrests on his rap sheet, according to police. Those include several domestic violence calls.
His defense lawyer has requested a psychiatric evaluation. He says Maldonado doesn't remember what happened.
Maldonado is being held without bail. He is due back in court Sept. 12.
