A man was rescued after his car smashed through a guard rail and plunged into the Norwalk River.
Police say the crash happened around 1:30 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of Main and Wall streets.
Fire officials estimate the drop to the water to be around 40 feet. A 35-year-old man was trapped inside his car after it landed in the river upside down.
"The rear of the car was facing upriver so the current was pushing the water into the car," says Deputy Chief Edward Prescott.
Rescue crews had to rappel down into the water to rescue the man.
The man was taken to Norwalk Hospital and is expected to survive.
Police are still trying to determine the cause of the incident. One officer at the scene said he smelled a strong odor of alcohol.
A firefighter was injured in the rescue but is expected to be OK.
