A Shelton man who shot himself in the leg last month at a crowded movie theater turned himself in to police Thursday morning.

Police had an arrest warrant out for 51-year-old Theo Thomopoulos. The shooting occurred at Bow Tie Cinemas on Westport Avenue in Norwalk on Sept. 8 and caused panic for hundreds of theatergoers who heard the gunshot.

Thomopoulos suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the leg and was taken to Norwalk Hospital.

He told police he accidentally pulled the trigger on his gun while he was watching the Stephen King horror movie "It."

People said the film features a red balloon and some thought the sound of the gunshot was the balloon popping in the movie. Police say people had to evacuate the theater after the incident.

Police say no one else was hurt in the incident.

"The witnesses we spoke to after the incident certainly were quite upset, wondering what had occurred. Certainly in light of what goes on around the country, in what seems like a daily basis, it was certainly upsetting for everyone in that theater," says Lt. Terry Blake.

Police say Thomopoulos has a valid pistol permit and is being held on a $25,000 bond.
