Some southwestern Connecticut fishermen are celebrating an environmental victory dealing with the Housatonic River.

The Department of Environmental Protection recently stopped letting a Milford marina dump contaminated sediment into the river. Caswell Cove started dumping dredged material into the river last month with the DEP's permission.

Fisherman Rich Conklin says the results were disastrous. "Already we noticed less fish in the area where they're dumping because they're dumping right on top of a huge fish population," said Conklin. Local fisherman created a public outcry over the situation.

The DEP has now told Caswell Cove to dump its sediment in a Long Island Sound disposal site off New Haven. While the marina is complying, a manager says the decision could be costly for the business and, ultimately, cause it to close.
