New Yorkers and local officials attended the Churches United For Fair Housing gala in Williamsburg on Thursday to raise money and bring attention to fair housing across the city.
Rob Solano, executive director of Churches United for Fair Housing, says affordability is a major issue for New York.
“It's so difficult right now to go shopping. It's so difficult to go to the movies. It's so difficult to pay your rent. We need to ensure that New Yorkers can stay," said Solano.
The event's “Person of the Year” was awarded to Mayor-elect Zhoran Mamdani. He says a central pillar of his campaign was affordability.
"When we refuse a vision of a city where luxury is treated as if it is inevitable, as something that would dominate over those who are struggling just to make it to the first of the month," said Mamdani.
He claims that in just a few weeks, he will take action on his campaign promises.
"As your next mayor, I promise this will remain a people-powered administration," said Mamdani.
