Milford police said Wednesday night that a search for a missing elderly man was called off after they learned it was a false alarm.
Police said they were called to the Long Island Sound off Burwell's Beach around 6 p.m. after a man said his father was missing in the water.
The man said he went in the water to search for his father, but police say they had nothing that even suggested he had even been in the water.
Police said they worked with Connecticut State Police and visited the man's family when they learned the man's father had actually died seven years ago.
The man was taken to a local hospital for a mental evaluation. His identity has not yet been released.
There is no word on whether he'll face any charges.
