New Britain police say the remains of a 12-year-old girl were discovered at a vacant home last week – and her mother is among three people charged in her death.
Officers say they received a call about suspicious behavior. That’s when officers discovered Jacqueline “Mimi” Torres decomposing in a storage bin on Clark Street.
Investigators determined that she died in the fall of 2024 at her family’s previous home in Farmington. They say she suffered physical abuse and malnourishment.
Police believe her family brought her remains to New Britain when they moved in March.
Three people have been arrested in connection to Torres’ death, including her mother, 29-year-old Karla Garcia.
Garcia and her boyfriend, Jonatan Nanita, are charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Nanita has also been charged with tampering with physical evidence.
Torres’ aunt, Jackelyn Garcia, is charged with cruelty to persons under 19 years old.
Mayor Erin Stewart and both New Britain and Farmington police departments shared details Monday in a news conference.
"On a personal note, as a mother, this makes me sick to my stomach to be standing here today," said Stewart.
Farmington Police Chief Paul Melanson says the case is deeply heartbreaking and disturbing.
"Our detectives with our local and state partners have worked tirelessly to uncover the truth and to bring justice for Jacqueline,” said Melanson. “No child should ever have to endure such suffering. On behalf of Farmington and New Britain police departments we extend our deepest condolences to all who have been affected by this tragedy."
The suspects are being arraigned Tuesday afternoon.
