Bronx commuters may soon be able to avoid subway and bus delays if a proposed MTA text messaging plan is approved.
The plan, which will be voted on by the MTA board Wednesday, allows residents who sign up for the service to get notices of service disruptions on their cell phones. Travelers can also narrow the alerts they receive to specific subway or bus lines and times of travel.
A $600,000 contract for a technology company to provide the service has already been approved. There is no word on when the service would become available. The MTA currently posts alerts to their Web site when unexpected disruptions occur.
The MTA is also currently looking at technology to provide cell phone reception in all subway stations, but that project could take 10 years to complete.
