Flags flew at half-staff Friday to remember the Connecticut National Guard member who was killed in a crash on I-95 in Westchester.

Ronald Patterson, 43, of Bridgeport, was a passenger on a National Guard truck carrying spent ammunition to Fort Dix in New Jersey on Thursday.

State police said the truck and another vehicle collided and the truck rolled over, ejecting two soldiers.

The other soldier was identified as Kayla Cerda, of Shelton, who suffered serious injuries in the crash. News 12 is told she is responding well to treatment and is no longer listed in critical condition.

No charges have been filed, but the investigation is ongoing.

Patterson had been a member of the military for more than 16 years and became a full-time member of the National Guard in 2003. He served in Iraq and received numerous awards for his service.

Guard members say it is truly a tragedy to lose one of their own.

Cerrene Patterson says her husband's death is hard to accept because it happened so close to home, not in a war zone.

Patterson leaves behind a 7-week-old daughter.
