Residents in the South Bronx are calling on city leaders to repair a stretch of roadway along Jerome Avenue near 181st Street that they say has become dangerous for drivers, bicyclists and families with strollers.

Neighbors told News 12 that potholes, loose gravel and uneven pavement have caused problems in the area for years.

“This is a major problem, no good man,” one community member said.

Another resident said the conditions have existed for “maybe ten years or more.”

“They should have been doing this a long time ago,” the resident said. “How long has it been like this? Maybe ten years or more. You keep going down there’s so many more.”

News 12 observed multiple potholes and rough patches along Jerome Avenue near East 181st Street.

An 8-year-old boy named Ahayn said he has fallen while riding his bicycle in the area and described a close call with traffic.

“Sometimes when I ride my bike, I fall sometimes, I almost got hit by a car,” he said.

His mother, Bibi Fatema, said the conditions have also created challenges while pushing her daughter in a stroller.

“I have difficulty walking with the stroller, and my daughter has stroller and she fell so many times,” she said. “She fell two times in the rocks.”

Some residents said they are unsure who to contact about the issue.

“I’m looking for the police office I’m not sure who to tell,” one resident said.

News 12 reached out to the New York City Department of Transportation and the New York City Department of Environmental Protection.

The agencies said they are looking into the issue.
